Blurb:
It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.
At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.
Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.
What To Expect:
The Scorpio Races is a YA fantasy action novel with dystopian vibes, set in an island community and inspired by the water horses of Celtic mythology. Readers can expect peril, life-and-death competition, and closed door romance.
Content Warnings:
Language: Moderate – Sporadic use of mild to strong profanity.
Sexual Content: Closed Door – Light kissing; does contain somewhat frequent innuendo, plus one instance of a woman touching a man inappropriately.
Violence: Heavy. There isn’t violence in every chapter but the violent moments include graphic descriptions of blood, body parts, and entrails. Includes both human and animal death.
Substance Use: Mild – Some scenes take place in a pub so drinking/drunkenness is mentioned.
Prejudices: Moderate – As the only woman to ever enter the race, Puck is the object of sexism, which ranges from mild taunting to violent behaviors and occasional sexual comments.
Religious Themes: God is mentioned and church is presented as tradition in the community. Puck even goes to confession once. There is also some mysticism, curses, and mythological religious elements.
Other Topics: Moderate – Grief and loss of family due to death or abandonment.
