What To Expect:

This book follows the adventures of a group of children over the course of a summer and autumn, focusing particularly on a girl with a knack for story telling. It is very mild in terms of explicit content, but features a significant emphasis on Christianity.

Language: None, aside from a brief mention that a character has once used a profane word without mentioning what the word was.

Violence: Mild – A few accidental deaths by unintended violence, mention of a child being whipped as punishment, one fistfight

Prejudices: One character looks down upon another throughout the novel because he is a “hired boy,” mention of wanting to convert the “cannibals,” some tension mentioned between Methodists and Presbyterians

Religious Themes: Christianity heavily featured throughout – main characters are Presbyterian and their religious beliefs/practices make up a significant part of the novel, especially the practice of praying. Frequent discussions by children about theology (usually with degree of misunderstanding). One character is thought to be a witch.

Other Topics: Loss of parents (mild), disdain for being overweight (moderate), abandonment by parent (moderate)
